Located in Independence, Missouri, the 1859 Jail is built of huge limestone blocks
and outfitted with heavy iron doors. It was the site of at least six hangings and unimaginable hardships for its
prisoners during the 74 years it served as a jail. During the Civil War, the jail housed men, women, and children...sometimes
20 to a cell. A jail guard and a Deputy Marshall also died violently at the site. The 1859 Jail is steeped in
